As a self-proclaimed tech-savvy CPA, I'm always looking for new tools to improve my workflow and streamline repetitive accounting tasks. Recently, I stumbled upon a discovery that allows me to create my own sidebar and shortcuts for Quickbooks Online without cluttering my Chrome bookmarks bar. It's called RightTool, a beta extension that lets you customize Quickbooks with a series of useful features and tools.
In this blog, I'll share my first impression of RightTool, and why I think you should try it in your firm, as well as another extension I've been using for a long time to speed up my work: Vimium. Both of these extensions have the potential to make Quickbooks more efficient and help your accounting team get through repetitive tasks more quickly.
What is RightTool for Quickbooks?
At first glance, RightTool looks like an additional taskbar that integrates with Quickbooks Online. Why Would I need an extra sidebar? You might ask. Well, this tool lets you customize your dashboard to your most frequently used pages and reports to help you navigate the endless pages and options Quickbooks has.
Personally, I tend to forget where some things are even if I use them frequently. In my early days, I used to save those pages that I used the most in the native Chrome bookmark bar, but you can imagine that with too many clients and too many accounts, that can quickly become unmanageable. With that amount of repetitive tasks, going from one place to another in more than 3 or 4 clicks can feel like a waste of time.
With RightTool you can rearrange your favorite shortcuts to suit your needs, and add new widgets or charts to display important information at a glance. You can also access specific pages with just one click, and personalize your favorites for even faster navigation. Plus, it has a search bar to quickly find the page you need.
So, in the free version you can expect:
- Customizable dashboard with quick access to frequently used pages
- Favorites bar for faster navigation
- Multi-window support
- Integrated search engine for easy page and report lookup
But I believe it's much more than that. According to their website, RightTool can help you easily view and edit transactions, create custom reports, and even set up automatic reminders. You can search for transactions by specific criteria and filter results by date, amount, or other parameters.
These features are available in the Pro Version, where you could access things like:
- Transaction list with advanced filters and sorting options
- Edit and bulk-edit transactions
- Create custom reports and save them for future use
- Reminders for important transactions and deadlines
Remember It’s a beta tool, so this means it is always changing and has new features so this surely is not a comprehensive guide, but just a quick first glance at what it looks like.
Is It Free?
RightTool offers a limited free version that has just enough to plug and start playing and it is already interesting. According to their website, they also have a 14-day free trial of the Pro version, after which you can choose from several pricing plans depending on your needs. The Basic plan starts at 49.99 per month and adds new users for $14.99.
Honestly, I'm excited to see what new features will be added to RightTool in the future. I think it's worth checking out if you're looking to make your Quickbooks experience even more efficient and personalized.
Vimium
Vimium is a browser extension for Google Chrome that’s been quite popular for a while now and allows you to navigate the web using keyboard shortcuts. As someone who is used to using keyboard shortcuts in programs like Excel and Word, I was immediately intrigued by the idea of being able to navigate Quickbooks in a similar way.
With Vimium, you can easily switch between tabs, scroll up and down a page, and even perform searches within a page, all without having to use the mouse or touchpad. This is especially helpful for me when I'm working on a complex financial statement or trying to navigate multiple tabs at once.
One of the things I appreciate about Vimium is that it's not just limited to QuickBooks or other financial software. You can use Vimium to navigate through any website, which makes it a versatile tool for anyone who spends a lot of time on the web.
Once you've installed and activated Vimium, you can press F to see a menu of instant shortcuts that can be used to navigate through any website. By pressing a letter associated with a menu item, you can quickly access that menu or option without using the mouse.
For example, let's say you want to go to the settings menu in QuickBooks. With Vimium activated, all you have to do is press F, then press E (which is the shortcut for settings), and the settings menu will open up without you having to use the mouse. It's a small thing, but it can really add up throughout a workday.
Overall, I've been really impressed with Vimium and how it's helped me work more efficiently. If you're looking for a tool to help you navigate the web more effectively, I'd highly recommend giving Vimium a try. It's easy to install and use, and it can make a difference in how quickly and efficiently you're able to get your work done.
